General Bajwa was commissioned into the Pakistan Army's 16th Battalion of the Baloch Regiment in 1980. He has served in various command and staff appointments throughout his career, including as the Brigade Major of an Infantry Brigade, Chief of Staff of a Corps, and Inspector General of Training and Evaluation.

Before his appointment as the COAS, General Bajwa served as the Inspector General of the Training and Evaluation Branch of the Pakistan Army. He has also served as the Force Commander of the United Nations peacekeeping mission in Congo. As the COAS, General Bajwa has been involved in several initiatives aimed at promoting regional stability and improving Pakistan's relations with neighboring countries.
